White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki held a press conference on Wednesday, announcing that a total of 90 million economic impact payments have been sent out to Americans following last week’s passage of President Joe Biden’s relief bill.
Education Secretary Miguel Angel Cardona joined the press conference, announcing that the Health and Human Services (HHS) has allocated an additional 10 billion for in-school screening and testing to ensure schools remain open.
Asked about Tuesday night’s spa shooting in Atlanta, Psaki said the Trump administration’s actions in blaming China for the coronavirus and calling COVID-19 the “China virus” is in part to blame for rising anti-Asian racism incidents in the country.
Eight victims were killed in the shooting, six of whom were Asian women. Police are yet to determine whether the act was a hate crime.
Psaki confirmed that both Canada and Mexico have requested vaccine help from the U.S. but provided no answer on whether those requests will be granted and when. She added the top priority for Biden’s administration remains to vaccinate Americans first.
