Some helpful advice based on my own experiences of features you might want in your greenhouse and might just help you avoid the pitfalls before you buy a greenhouse. I've owned polythene, polycarbonate, and glass greenhouses and grown in all seasons with each. So I thought it might be useful to give you my experiences of greenhouses from someone who has grown tomatoes, peppers, aubergine, courgettes, chillies, herbs, flowers, and lots more. Plus I grow all year round in mine.
What should you think about before buying a greenhouse to help you get the best from your growing experience.

Full tour of 3 off-grid passive solar growing domes that can be used as 4-season year-round greenhouses in just about any climate and growing zone. The geodesic dome structure can withstand up to 7 feet of snow and ~180km/h wind speeds. They're built with cedar struts to withstand humidity, marine-grade aluminum hubs for strength, and polycarbonate panels that provide a 1.6 R-value and are fully recyclable.
In Canada, these growing domes are sold by Arctic Acres:
https://arcticacres.ca/
https://www.facebook.com/arcticacres/
https://www.instagram.com/arctic_acres/
In the US, these growing domes are sold by Growing Spaces:
https://growingspaces.com/
The growing domes have a specific number of intake and exhaust fans based on their square footage and the CFM (cubic foot per minute) required. These fans are powered by solar panels and they don't need an external power source to function.
There are quite a few additional passive solar features that help regulate the temperature inside the domes, including aluminum shade cloth, bicarbonate spray coating, a reflectix wall, a thermal mass pond, and geothermal ventilation.
We love how these simple technologies can help make growing food and being self-sufficient year-round a little easier and less energy-intensive in all types of climates.
Thanks for watching!

Make your own Post & Beam Greenhouse with twin wall polycarbonate glazing and a poured concrete foundation. This timber frame style Western Red Cedar post & beam greenhouse has a base that's 10 feet by 12 feet. I cover all the carpentry and construction of this garden greenhouse starting with excavation, making the concrete forms and pouring the foundation. Then I move on to cutting, notching, and preparing the posts, beams, ties, and rafters. Followed by the assembly of the post and beam frame. Then I cut and install the twin wall polycarbonate glazing and install it on the walls and roof. There's also some custom cedar louvered vents and a fan for air circulation. Then I build and install a light-weight cedar door and finish the construction with a two part ridge cap for the roof. There will be a four part detailed follow up video series after this. I have a 14 page greenhouse plan that's available at the link below.

Josh's wife is really into gardening and planting beautiful greenery leading to her desire for a greenhouse. This way, she can keep her plants alive during the winter months and incubate some new plants so they're ready for the spring.
Josh began the design with a 3d model in Fusion 360. We got our bill of materials and the cut list then headed to our local Lowe's to get the supplies to begin framing the structure. I chose to use pressure treated lumber for this exterior addition to resist the moisture and humidity that may build up inside the greenhouse. Using Josh's measurements, we nailed together the floor and added the front and back wall studs.
Before adding a structure to your yard, you may chose to grate and level the area beforehand. Josh didn't want to tear up the yard, and here in Kentucky, the clay is super hard. In lieu of digging into the ground to level it, we chose to level the floor frame by adding 2x4 posts semi-driven into the ground. This way, Josh and i could level the floor and nail it to those posts along the span of the greenhouse. Now that we had a level surface to work from, we continued to build out the frame by connecting the front and back studs and then connecting those two walls with some ceiling joists.
For the greenhouse floor, Josh wanted something that could resist any standing water that would fall down from the plants. We found some engineered siding panels at Lowe's that are weather-resistant and come in large, 4' x 8' sheets. These panels are only 3/8" thick, so we added another layer of pressure treated 1/2" plywood to ensure the floor was strong enough to walk on. We fit three of these double-layered panels on top of the floor frame, making sure to cut around the wall studs and secured them with screws.
For the greenhouse's exterior, it is possible to simply cover the bare frame with the clear polycarbonate sheets, but because of this greenhouse's size, that would take more than the 10 panels we allotted for this project. We had to order the sheets from Lowes.com and the came in a pack of 10. So rather than sacrificing the size of the greenhouse, Josh got creative and added a decorative element to the outside that helped use less polycarbonate.
We decided to use the cutoffs of the engineered, exterior sheeting to make a skirting of wood panels that wrapped around the greenhouse. To cover any seams and to give the element some definition, Josh cut up some 1x4 trim pieces that really set the decorative element apart. It looked really nice and flowed super well with the overall design. Again, these step is optional, but it does look fantastic and it helps save on the more expensive material later.
At this point in the project, we have a nice looking frame of a greenhouse. To make it functional as a greenhouse, we need a way to trap the radiant heat from the sun inside the structure. We found many ways to do this from using reclaimed windows, rolls of plastic tarp pulled tight, glass panes, and sheets of acrylic.

Here in the Upper Midwest, the gardening season is short, typically May through September. By building a greenhouse, we can harness the sun’s rays to let plants thrive as early as March and extend harvest into late fall. A greenhouse is also a great place to store less hardy plants during harsh winters.
Even if you live in a more temperate region, a greenhouse will create a perfect climate for plants, protecting them from temperature swings, storms and pests. We built our greenhouse from cedar, which weathers beautifully, and polycarbonate sheets, which diffuse the sunlight and give even exposure to all the plants. Hey friends!
***Don't forget to check out the Q&A that I did for the hoop house build to answer all of your questions! https://youtu.be/zl4sZYStqmE AND our "GARDENING & GREENHOUSES" PLAYLIST for more gardening & hoop house content! https://youtube.com/playlist?l....ist=PLz6ny2sz2Z23Zs1
If you love to garden as much as we do, you're probably looking for ways to extend your growing season and protect your plants from the elements & pests, am I right? The battle is constant. We LOVE to garden with greenhouses because they provide fantastic protection for your plants.
In this video, we've decided to build our own 10X20 foot hoop house! After building several greenhouses and now a hoop house, I can tell you the hoop house is less expensive & WAY easier/faster to put up.
This hoop house is built with cattle panels that we purchased from Tractor Supply. What a fast, easy set up! Some people arch their cattle panels all the way to the ground & fasten them down. But we wanted our hoop house to be taller, so as you can see in the video, we built a 24" wooden foundation & then arched the cattle panels to fasten to the wooden frame...which in turn made the hoop house taller!
This DIY hoop house took us maybe 2 days tops! It's big & spacious & I can't wait to get my seedlings in the ground! Just in time for the growing season.
Materials you will need:
1. Greenhouse plastic (4 months after the build we changed out the plastic. We changed it out with a durable, long lasting greenhouse plastic which was 40ft X 25ft, 6 MIL thick, 4 Year UV Resistant Polyethylene: https://geni.us/CkiYCaD
2. 5 cattle panels (ours were 16ft long by 50in high, made with 4 gauge wire): we bought ours from Tractor Supply Co.
3. Roll of screen for your windows
4. (2) pks zip ties
5. (2) pks pipe insulation
6. Straight nails
7. U-shaped nails (1-1/4” length by 1/4” round crown)
8. Screws
9. (4) Metal T-posts
10. (2) 4x4s cut in half
11. (2) bags cement
12. (4) 2x2x8s
13. (12) 2x4x10s
14. (15) 1x2x8s
15. (17) 2x4x8s
After your hoop house is constructed, you can have fun adding some upgrades to enhance your hoop house experience! Two things I always add to my greenhouse & hoop house are shade cloths to regulate the temperature in the HOT summer months & fans to help circulate the air.

ANOTHER GREENHOUSE?!?!?! It's done, it's FINALLY DONE...
Come hang out with us as we build an adorable 8X10 back yard greenhouse from scratch! And YOU can build one too! This is our 2nd greenhouse build as most of you know...I was SO sad when we sold the farmhouse and I had to let go of my wonderful greenhouse that Joe built me after only using it ONE spring! But...a little bit of persuasion aka begging and some puppy dog eyes & I was finally able to convince Joe to build me another one! YES!
***WE DO NOT HAVE PLANS for this build*** I gave Joe the dimensions I wanted & he built to those specs! This video is the only instruction we have to offer. We're happy to answer questions though!
Gardening in the greenhouse is awesome! The plants THRIVE in the warm temperature & the greenhouse protects the plants from pests AND the outside elements like storms that can bring torrential down pours and terrorizing winds...which can be detrimental to your growing crops!
This greenhouse is probably 1/2 the size of the farm greenhouse BUT it will give us a lot of growing space regardless & most importantly, it'll give me somewhere to spend my time in the cold winter months to still be creative in the garden & continue providing goodies for our bellies!
This greenhouse took us about 2-1/2 wks to build...I actually couldn't believe how fast we did it but that's just how we roll!
We spent roughly $2500 to build this beauty. A lot of things I got super cheap on Offer Up like the door for $10, the antique ladder was cheap (can't remember exactly how much I paid because I got it years ago!) and the pink vintage sink I snagged for ONLY $25! Yeah baby!
I hope you enjoy this video, Joe & I worked really hard and we were excited to share it with you!
Drop me a comment below if you have any questions about how we built our greenhouse!

The first autonomous bio-ecological greenhouse in Belgium
The Kaseco greenhouse ...
• is autonomous and energy-friendly
• is bio-ecological
• lives up to the cradle-to-cradleprinciples of circular construction
The principles behind the autonomous bio-ecological greenhouse
Our greenhouse is unique in living an autonomous life. As such it completely fits into the rapidly growing off-grid lifestyle in which we choose to be self-sufficient and independent from suppliers or gas, water and electricity connections.
Bio-ecology
Building according to bio-ecological principles we aim to use as many natural and cultivable construction materials as possible. Those have the advantage that they have unlimited supply and that their extraction process is less or not harmful to the environment. By building bio-ecologically we ensure more harmony between human and environment: a healthy mind in a healthy body can thrive fully in healthy surroundings.
Circular construction
We build according to circular economy principles, also called circular economy. That means that we do not exhaust any or the least possible raw material supplies and so we have to think about the choice of materials for the greenhouse from the start of construction. In the world of design and construction the German chemist Michael Braungart and the American architect William McDonough translated this principle to the cradle-to-cradle philosophy in which they chose to use materials that could be used again in the future for other projects without quality loss.
IS THE PURCHASE OF A GREENHOUSE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE? ON THE CONTRARY ...
We made some calculations purely on the basis of the house itself (without the price of land). This way you can see that the greenhouse is barely more expensive than the classic compact house and that after a couple of years you have recuperated the additional charge. With the rising energy prices this recuperating effect is only accelerated. Even more so: it is the intention to create an energy surplus. Once in this situation we can reconnect to the network and offer this energy – preferably to the underprivileged or people who can use it best.
ISN’T THE GREENHOUSE TOO HOT IN SUMMER?
NOT WARMER THAN IN ANY OTHER HOUSE.
Yes, it will be hot in the greenhouse. But do not forget that we don’t live in the greenhouse, but in the house within the greenhouse – a remark we also make when being asked about the cold.
The greenhouse is ventilated by opening the ridges in combination with cooled air from Canadian wells under the ground. Like most people we stay outside in the shade or inside the house in the cooled space when it’s hot. The trick is to keep the doors and windows of the house closed so that the water pump can do its job. Furthermore we will sleep downstairs, in the rooms staying cool that way.
ISN’T THE GREENHOUSE TOO COLD IN WINTER? NOT AT ALL. REMEMBER: WE LIVE IN THE HOUSE, NOT IN THE GREENHOUSE.
Indeed, the greenhouse will mainly follow the outside temperature but, just like we emphasized when being asked about the heat: we live within the house, not within the greenhouse. The house itself is designed in such a way that it warms up very slowly and cools off very slowly. By the time the house is really cooled off, dawn breaks and we can enjoy the heat of the sun – even in winter.
What about hail or storm?
THE GLASS OF OUR GREENHOUSE HOUSE IS AS STRONG AS THE WINDSHIELD OF A CAR.
The roof is made of laminated glass. That is as strong as the windshield of a car. You have as much chance of breaking glass as you do with a car and it is very rare. The side walls are made of single glass, although the bottom two meters are tempered. The risks are no greater than breaking glass with your car or in your home.
Who does the window cleaning?
ONCE A YEAR, BY A SPECIALIZED COMPANY, WITH WATER
So many windows to patch, you might think. But don't compare the glass panes of the conservatory with, say, the window of your kitchen, which becomes damp or greasy with oils or grease. Of course, the glass walls gather dust and sometimes a leaf sticks to them or we are sometimes the target of a bird that gives everything free rein. Just like a car parked outside. That is why we have the conservatory and the glass thoroughly maintained once a year by a specialized company. Cleaning is done with water only.

Earth is a comfortable place for living things. It’s just the right temperatures for plants and animals – including humans – to thrive. Why is Earth so special?
Well, one reason is: the greenhouse effect!
Comprehension Questions:
1. The clear glass of a greenhouse allows sunlight to shine into the greenhouse, while also trapping the _______’s heat inside. This is how a greenhouse keeps plants warm, even at night and in the winter.
2. What is the name of the jacket of gases surrounding our Earth?
3. Name one of the greenhouse gases.
4. What kind of human activities can release more carbon dioxide into our atmosphere?
5. True or False: Extra greenhouse gases in our atmosphere cause our planet to warm up.
Answer Key:
