Greenhouses Are Game-Changers. And building your own can be amazing. But where do you start? As quite literally one of the most expensive endeavors you'll ever have in your garden, getting your greenhouse located, orientated, and built right from the start is a must.

I built my 400 square foot greenhouse 10 years ago nearly to the day. In this video I'll walk you through that process, as well, I'll give you 3 main things to consider when taking on the task of constructing your own.

2022 is the Year of the Garden! We deserve it after the last little while, and growing our own food and self sufficiency is just the reward we need to get back on track!

This was filmed over a period of about 6 weeks. My wife and I did everything except the electrical work (which was not filmed). The interval between photos was set to 30 seconds. The film is displayed at 25 FPS. The kit used to build this greenhouse was provided by Cedar-built Greenhouses. The greenhouse dimensions are 10 ft x 20 ft.

I have been wanting a greenhouse for quite some time, so I had to make it happen when I saw someone post a a brand new harbor freight 10 x 12 greenhouse kit on Facebook marketplace for over half off the original price. Luckily the kit was brand new in the box so I had all of the the directions to be able to use for the build. The project was not as labor intensive as I was expecting, but definitely more time intensive than I was thinking in the beginning. In the video I explain how I built the kit from the ground up and hopefully if anything this can serve as a blueprint to other who are researching how to build this or may be stuck on a particular part of the process. As others have noted the base kit is definitely not the sturdiest greenhouse on the market, but for the price you are able to add some cheap reinforcements that can enable this greenhouse to stand tall for many years to come.

In this video I explain what the greenhouse effect is in Ark Survival Evolved. Simply greenhouse walls, ceilings and roofs provide 15% greenhouse effect each. Nearby walls and ceilings can add up to a total of a 300% greenhouse effect (20 greenhouse structures needed), which will give a 4X boost to crop growth speed. A crop plot must have a greenhouse ceiling or roof above it to get a greenhouse effect.

He turned his father’s RV garage into an off-grid home relying on photovoltaics, rainwater harvester, and composting toilet. Attached to the home, he built a half-buried (6-feet-under) greenhouse (walipini) to use the earth’s heat to grow figs and fruits during the long Montana winters.

On the land surrounding the home, garden members (open to all) farm using permaculture techniques like planting in guilds- layers of plants that support each other- to cut down on labor requirements. It’s a communal, not community, garden so instead of individual plots, garden members share the work and the crop (making it easy to take vacations or time off).

Weaver believes their farm could serve as a model for others. “When NYC hit 1 million people in the mid-1800s all of their food was grown within seven miles. We have a much more severe climate than New York, but I would say we could grow a lot of our food for 100,000 people in the valley if we had these. I did a calculation once that if we had one thousand 2000-square-foot greenhouses we could produce a substantial amount of our fruit without having to truck it in. But you’d need a thousand of them so we’d need a completely different economic model than we currently have.”

Beyond the benefits of fresh, local produce, the garden also builds community, or what Weaver calls a bonded tribe. “A bonded tribe being a group of people doing something to make a living together, in this case we’re growing food together, and doing that bonds people in a way that say getting together and watching football on a couch doesn’t bond people very well.”

Jennifer Toland (wilderness host @ Eliguk Lake Lodge) grows all her plants from seeds she collects from last years bounty. Living off the grid, she and her husband, Arön run a fishing resort at a remote ‘fly in only’ location in the Wild West Chilcotin. At 3600’ and temps that drop to below 50 in the Winter, they need a large wood fired greenhouse to produce greens through the Summer (as they get a hard frost every month.) This way they can grow veggies from April to November.
