While more than 4,400 migrants from Cuba and Haiti have made their way by boat to the state since August, more than 700 migrants arrived in the Florida Keys over New Year's weekend, officials said. Many arrived on makeshift, motorized rafts used to make the dangerous 100-mile (160-kilometer) journey from the communist island across the dangerous Florida Straits.

Negotiations continue Friday ahead of Monday's strike deadline involving thousands of New York City nurses.

Approximately 10,000 nurses across five hospitals say they'll strike Monday if they don't get better pay and staffing.

Mount Sinai, one of the five hospitals still negotiating, has offered its nurses 19.1% wage increases over the next three years, according to an internal memo shared Thursday night.

The increases would be 7%, 6% and 5% over the next three years.

The hospital believes it is similar to increases agreed to by the nurses in negotiations with New York Presbyterian.

Similarly, Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx - also still negotiating with the nurses - says it offered an 18% wage increase, as well as "fully funded healthcare for life, and a significant increase in registered nurses in the emergency departments."

We are just over a day away from when thousands of New York City nurses say they'll walk off the job if their needs aren't met. If their union and their hospitals can't agree by Monday morning, a strike will take place. CBS2's Jennifer Bisram reports.

Thousands of nurses at two New York City hospitals went on strike on Monday after contract negotiations stalled over pay and staffing levels, a move that caused one of the facilities to postpone procedures and appointments. The walkout involved more than 7,000 nurses at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx and Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, according to the New York State Nurses Association.

“Nurses don't want to fight. We would rather be inside taking care of our patients, but safely, in a safe manner. Not the condition they have been working in for the past five, 10 years," New York State Nurses Association president Nancy Hagan said. "Enough is enough.”

The hospitals said in separate statements that they offered a 19.1 per cent compounded wage increase to the nurses. Montefiore Medical Center also said it was committed to create over 170 new nursing positions.

Montefiore said the strike forced them to reschedule all elective surgeries and procedures and postpone appointments at ambulatory locations, while Sinai said most of its outpatient appointments and procedures are going forward as scheduled. Since beginning contract negotiations four months ago, the union had been able to reach agreements or new contracts for nurses at seven other New York City hospitals.
