A vigil is being held Tuesday evening for the Muslim family police say were targeted in a violent attack that left a nine-year-old boy in hospital and his sister, parents and grandmother dead in London, Ont.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alongside other Canadian political leaders are expected to be in attendance to show solidarity with the Muslim-Canadian community.
The London Muslim Mosque says the vigil will be held at 7 p.m. in its parking lot. As of midday Tuesday, a Facebook page for the event showed over 600 people expected to attend.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has said the government is working with the local health unit to temporarily ease COVID-19 restrictions to allow people to gather, adding that he will also be in attendance.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will also attend the vigil, as will Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh.
The victims have been identified as Salman Afzaal, 46, his 44-year-old wife Madiha Salman, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna Afzaal and Afzaa’s 74-year-old mother. Nine-year-old Fayez Afzaal suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
