Thousands of mourners gathered to take part in a funeral procession in the city of Omdurman for former Prime Minister of Sudan, Sadiq al-Mahdi on Friday. Al-Mahdi passed away at the age of 84 in the United Arab Emirates, where he had travelled to in order to seek treatment for COVID-19.
He was buried at the al-Imam al-Mahdi tomb, the original resting place of his great-grandfather, who had been buried there over a century ago in 1885.
A member of the National Umma Party, al-Mahdi was Sudan’s last democratically elected prime minister, having formally served in the role between 1966 to 1967 and 1986-1989. His second term ended when al-Mahdi was overthrown by the forces of Omar-Al Bashir in a coup d’etat. The rule of al-Bashir over Sudan spanned across three decades, has come to an end in April 2019.
Sudan has registered a total of 16,864 cases of COVID-19 with 1,215 related deaths, according to the latest data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, as updated on Friday.
