Thousands of people took to the streets of Warsaw and other Polish cities on Thursday as a near-total ban on abortion came into effect.
The ruling, first announced last October by the Constitutional Tribunal, led to weeks of massive protests forcing the government to delay its implementation.
Police detained at least three people in the protests in Warsaw, including Klementyna Suchanow, one of the leaders of the Women’s Strike movement.
Under the new rules, terminations will only be permitted in cases of rape and incest and when the mother’s life or health is endangered. Doctors performing illegal abortions will face jail time.
