Kamala Harris pledges to fight for women, democracy at UN debut
U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris made her debut at the United Nations on Tuesday, telling a meeting on gender equality that globally, “democracy is increasingly under great strain” and the status of democracy “also depends fundamentally on the empowerment of women.”
The United States would work to improve both, Harris said in her video statement to the 65th Commission on the Status of Women.
“We are committed to upholding the democratic values embedded in the declaration. And we firmly believe that when we work together globally, we can achieve the vision within it,” she stated.
Harris said that President Joe Biden’s administration would also revitalize Washington’s partnership with U.N. Women – a United Nations body dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women.
