Global National: Oct. 19, 2021 | Alberta’s big cities mark historic mayoral election wins

In tonight’s top story: Alberta’s two biggest cities have made history after their municipal elections. Amarjeet Sohi is the first person of colour to be elected Edmonton’s mayor, while Jyoti Gondek will become Calgary’s first female mayor. Heather Yourex-West reports on the results of the vote, and what they could mean for the provincial government and Premier Jason Kenney.

And Dawna Friesen also speaks to Gandek about her journey to public service, what’s next for her city, as well as her relationship with the Alberta government.

Meanwhile, as COVID-19 patients flood Saskatchewan’s intensive care units, pressure is growing on the provincial government to impose restrictions. As Nathaniel Dove reports, if Premier Scott Moe doesn’t act, Saskatoon city councillors may take matters into their own hands instead.

Plus, Health Canada is now considering Pfizer’s request to approve the company’s COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11. As Abigail Bimman explains, questions remain about logistics and dosages.

Also, months after ditching its lockdown measures, the United Kingdom is again seeing a drastic rise in COVID-19 cases and deaths, despite its largely immunized population. Redmond Shannon explains how the U.K.’s early success with its vaccine rollout may be the root of its current troubles.

And from howling winds to crunching wheels, NASA’s Perseverance rover has been sending back a slew of sounds it’s recorded on Mars. Mike Drolet explains how the audio provides Earth’s scientists a deeper understanding of what it’s like on the Red Planet.
