Global National: May 19, 2021 | When will Canadians get their 2nd COVID-19 vaccine dose?

In our top story: It’s a question that’s emerging more and more Canadians get our first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. When will we get our second shot and will the four-month interval between doses be shortened. A total of 17.8 million Canadians, or 47 per cent of those eligible, have had one dose, but only 1.4 million or 3.9 per cent have been fully vaccinated. With millions more doses arriving, provinces are accelerating their rollout and as second doses are administered, talk is now focusing on getting Canada’s elderly fully vaccinated.

Vaccines are key to relaxing public health restrictions and opening the door to the possibility of going on vacation. The European Union (EU) on Wednesday said it is ready to open up to fully vaccinated visitors. The proposal still needs final approval and details are still being worked out. Abigail Bimman looks at what those plans mean for Canadians.

The Tokyo Olympic Games are set to take place in July after being delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Japan is now battling a spike in cases just weeks from the games. It’s not unique and many Asian countries are dealing with dangerous outbreaks after appearing to have the virus control. As Eric Sorensen reports, they also share a troubling trend in vaccinations.

There’s talk of a possible cease-fire at some point between Israel and Hamas, but tonight there’s no sign of it. U.S. President Joe Biden has again called the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, this time saying he expects a significant de-escalation in violence on the path to a cease-fire. Netanyahu says he’s determined to continue on with the attacks until Israel’s "aim is met." For a 10th day, Israel kept targeting Gaza and Hamas kept up rocket attacks on Israel. Most were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome defence system. Israel’s medical service says 12 Israelis have been killed, including two children. The toll in Gaza is almost 20 times that. Its health ministry says at least 227 people have been killed, including more than 100 women and children. Redmond Shannon reports.

The fate of an Ottawa professor is in question again tonight. A French court has upheld a decision, ordering Hassan Diab be tried in a 1980 bombing of a Paris synagogue. As David Akin explains, it’s unclear whether or not Canada will be asked to extradite him a second time.

A team of nurses from across Canada is helping exhausted colleagues in Toronto hospitals. Thanks to the Canadian Red Cross, nurses from across Alberta, B.C., Quebec, Ontario and the Northwest Territories have flown to Toronto to lend a hand in three hospitals. Caryn Lieberman went to one intensive care unit to find out what difference they’re making.

You’ve no doubt heard about the explosion of cicadas in parts of the U.S. There are trillions of the very loud winged insects. And for some reason, Jackson Proskow volunteered to go see them for himself.
