Global National: May 15, 2021 | Will Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout slow over Fortin resignation?

On this episode of Global National: The man tasked with leading Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout has stepped down. Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin was suddenly removed from his role on Friday, pending the results of a military police investigation into sexual misconduct. As Abigail Bimman reports, Fortin is the latest high profile military member to be accused.

The push to get COVID-19 vaccines in arms ramped up across the Greater Toronto Area on Saturday with clinics taking place at the Toronto Zoo, The Aga Khan Museum, and even overnight in Mississauga, Ont. As Katherine Ward reports, some medical experts say the percentage of people vaccinated is not the only metric to be considered when it comes to reopening the economy.

In the U.S., new COVID-19 guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that allows fully vaccinated Americans to go maskless while indoors has sparked a sea of confusion. As Jennifer Johnson reports, not everyone’s ready to trust the honour system.

Plus, Israel struck the Gaza Strip with yet more airstrikes, destroying a building that housed The Associated Press and other international media outlets. Crystal Goomansingh reports on the mounting pressure on the international community to help find a peaceful solution.

And as nurses continue to play a pivotal role in Canada’s fight against COVID-19, staff shortages have forced many nurses to work even longer, stressful hours. Ross Lord looks at the efforts underway to entice more people to stay in the demanding profession.
