Global National: Feb. 22, 2021 | Canada’s new hotel quarantine rules begin, lead to frustration

On this episode of Global National: New federal rules now require air travellers arriving in Canada to get tested for COVID-19 and quarantine at a government-approved hotel at their own expense. Robin Gill explains why there’s still a lack of clarity over the new rules, and why they didn’t apply to one group of passengers on Monday.

Plus, the U.S. has now hit a tragic benchmark in the coronavirus pandemic, with at least 500,000 Americans losing their lives to COVID-19. As Jackson Proskow reports, many American families are grieving.

And Canada’s House of Commons defence committee has met to look into what the government did and did not know about the allegations of inappropriate behaviour against former chief of the defence staff Gen. Jonathan Vance. Mercedes Stephenson reports.

Canadian members of Parliament have voted to declare China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims a genocide. As Abigail Bimman reports, no MPs voted against the motion, but not everyone voted either.

Water operators in First Nations across Canada play a critical role in maintaining infrastructure, but they’re overworked and underpaid. As part of an investigation led by Global News, APTN, and Concordia University’s Institute for Investigative Journalism, Elizabeth McSheffrey reports on the struggle of these pivotal workers.

Also, community vaccination clinics are now opening in Nova Scotia, where COVID-19 case numbers remain relatively low. Ross Lord explains how the inoculation plan starts with people aged 80 and older.
