Global National: Feb. 14, 2021 | More contagious COVID-19 variant now in all 10 Canadian provinces

In our top story: Health officials in every province have confirmed cases of the highly-transmissible COVID-19 B.1.1.7 variant first discovered in the U.K. There are also cases involving variants from South Africa, Brazil and Nigeria. Starting Monday, new measures will come into effect in the U.K. Nationals coming from 33 "red-list" countries will have to quarantine in a government-approved hotel. The stay will cost the traveller thousands of dollars and will have to cover the cost of two COVID-19 tests. As Crystal Goomansingh explains, anyone caught breaking the rules could face jail time.

He’s fought that ruling all the way to the highest court in the country. Mike Armstrong has a look at the arguments and what’s at stake.

A day after former U.S. president Donald Trump was acquitted in his second impeachment trial, the battle may not yet be over. Seven Republican senators broke ranks to try and convict Trump of inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Despite the split verdict, the GOP is at a crossroads with its own political future. Meanwhile, Democrats are moving on from the trial, focusing on trying to get President Joe Biden’s coronavirus relief package rolled out. Jennifer Johnson reports.

Canada is looking at how to create a digital consumer currency that could result in something like a digital loonie being used as legal tender. A recent survey found most major banks are considering some form of digital currency in the next six years. Three research teams have produced proposals for the Bank of Canada. As Eric Sorensen reports, this could fuel the digital economy.
