Britain began its third COVID-19 lockdown on Tuesday, with citizens told to stay at home after the government called for one last major national effort to contain the virus as it ramps up its vaccination program.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the lockdown late on Monday, saying the highly-contagious new coronavirus variant first identified in the UK was spreading so fast it risked overwhelming the National Health Service (NHS) within 21 days.
In England, around 27,000 people are in hospital with COVID-19, a number 40 per cent higher than during the first peak of infections in April.
Britain has begun rolling out two COVID-19 vaccines, one made by Pfizer and BioNTech and the other by Oxford University and AstraZeneca. More than a million people have already received their first dose.
