Chilean fishermen set tires on fire, clash with police during protest at sea

Chilean navy officers and riot policemen fired tear gas canisters at fishermen demonstrating on Prat dock in the port of Valparaiso on Wednesday.

The clashes and melee broke out after the fishermen set fire to tyres on the port and blocked access to other ships coming in and leaving the area, using some 50 boats, according to local media reports.

The fishermen are demanding the government allows them to return to work in the area, after being transferred in 2013 to Quintero for the construction of a cove on the dock.

Chilean Secretary of Fisheries Alicia Gallardo confirmed a cove is being built and will be ready in 2024. Fishermen have said the claims are false.

Fishermen argue they have not been allowed to return to work two months after the agreed period to stay away had ended.
