The National Advisory Committee on Immunization is expected to release new guidance on the use of COVID-19 vaccine boosters on Friday as public health continues to face down the Omicron variant.
The federal government recently issued an urgent request to the committee for new directives on the eligibility criteria for boosters to protect Canadians against the highly-mutated variant of COVID-19.
The emerging evidence suggests that while the vaccine becomes less effective at preventing infection over time, protection against severe illness and death appears to be more durable.
The B.1.1.529 variant, also known as the "Omicron" variant, was first identified in South Africa, but new data shows the emerging threat slipped into countries before their defences were even in place. It is unclear where or when the variant first emerged.
